Paleoart of the Jurassic fish Dapedium sheltering in a Seirocrinus driftwood raft. They are circled by the plesiosaur Hauffiosaurus, which wait to pick them off one by one. Open-ocean animals tend to be attracted to floating objects for food and shelter. No reason this would be different in Jurassic times. Dapedium is a deep-bodied fish with the teeth to crush armored prey, and Hauffiosaurus is an early pliosaur; part of a lineage that would in some species dramatically shorten their necks. These fossils and more were found around the city of Holzmaden in Germany, one of the best Jurassic fossil sites known.
